Case Study: GBP Suspension in Google Maps — and a Ranking Boost After Reinstatement

Many local business owners have faced a situation where a GBP suspension caused their lead flow to dry up almost overnight. And no wonder — the connection between the website and the Google Maps listing stops working. Local promotion loses one of its most important placements: the local pack.

Some manage to get the listing reinstated and restore the local pack. But what if I told you that after reinstatement, the listing’s trust didn’t decrease — it increased? We were getting 10 leads per month before the suspension, and started getting approximately 50 leads per month after we restored the listing on Maps. That’s what this case study is about — in detail, step by step.

The Start — Automatic Verification

The project was SRQ Appliance Repair in Sarasota, Florida. We took it on from scratch. The client had nothing except an LLC — whose name was completely unsuitable for promotion. So we took the following steps:

Step 1

Change the business name. We added a second name (DBA) to the existing LLC and documented it through the state department.

We needed paperwork confirming ownership of this name.

Everything described in this step was done with one single goal: to enable automatic verification of the GBP listing.

Next, we needed a website. We started building it after collecting semantics and analyzing competitors in Sarasota, FL. But first:

Step 2

We found and registered a suitable domain name. This is a critically important step.

Next, to achieve our goal, we needed a sign.

Step 3

We created a sign with the core NAP data.

Key requirements for the sign:

  • Format: no smaller than A3
  • Must include the logo
  • NAP data used: business name, phone number, website

The crucial point: the sign must be permanently mounted on or near the front door of the premises — and it must be there before the website gets indexed. How much earlier? At least 14 days.

The next step is to launch the website. Yes, by the time we create the listing, the website must already be in Google’s index.

Step 4

Get the website indexed.

So, there are four steps to follow before you try to create a GBP profile. But that’s not all. We need an email account within the domain, so let’s create one:

Step 5

Create a corporate email.

The email must be on the business domain — and critically, it must be hosted within the Gmail ecosystem (Google Workspace).

With everything in place, we started the listing creation process:

  • Log in under the corporate Google Workspace account
  • Go to the Google Business Profile tool
  • Click “Add business”
  • Create the listing with the name matching the DBA (SRQ Appliance Repair)
  • Select the primary category
  • Add city, state, phone number (carefully, no errors)
  • Upload exterior photos of the location (with the sign we’d installed earlier)
  • Upload the logo

The listing went into a 48-hour review. One of the possible outcomes: “Your listing has been approved and will soon appear in search results.” That’s exactly what we were aiming for — and we achieved it.

What This Gave Us

  1. The client had been worried about verification — he’d had failed attempts before. We solved this.
  2. The listing converted two leads (phone calls) on the second day.
  3. Within one week, we brought the business to 10th place overall in local search — strong fora brand-new company. This gave us reason to expect growth in leads.
  4. Most importantly — we gained time and earned the client’s trust.

The Suspension — What Triggered It

It’s important to note: when you understand the system and know the risks, you can manage the process. The listing was suspended, but:

  1. We knew this could happen and went into it deliberately.
  2. We were planning the client’s appliance repair promotion over a multi-year horizon —which we’d agreed on at the start. We needed manual moderation to make the listing morestable long-term.

Important!

The trigger: adding additional categories.

Making changes in the listing management panel triggered an automatic review, which led to the suspension.

Reinstatement in 7 Days

As I’ve written before, a Google Business Profile suspension is not a catastrophe and not a death sentence. If the business is legitimate, there’s no problem proving it — and making the listing stronger in the process. Here’s what we did: we used the business name documents (that’s exactly why we obtained them in Step 1) and copies of rent payment receipts for the address. We attached both to the appeal and passed it quickly. Once again — if you have legitimate grounds for having a listing at that address and can meet Google’s requirements, there will be no barriers to reinstatement.

The Boost After Reinstatement

Why do we see growth instead of the expected stagnation? We can’t know the exact reason for certain, but here’s my take:

  • Before the suspension, the listing had weak system trust due to automatic verification. Wesolved the client’s verification problem, but was that good for optimization? After all, ourgoal is Google Maps promotion — right?
  • After reinstatement — which happens through manual review, with human involvement— the listing received greater trust. The system now had certainty about the legitimacy ofthe business at that location: documents proving the name, documents proving the address.

Below are visibility screenshots from before and after the suspension. Measurements taken in BrightLocal.

Results: ~50 Leads in the Last Month

This case study isn’t really about leads. But anyone reading it will ask: what did all this visibility produce? That’s a fair question. So here are the analytics for the last month — calls from the website and form submissions:

And here are the calls directly from the GBP listing for the same period:

Conclusions

  1. The main takeaway of this case study: a GBP suspension can be turned into a boost. Thisprocess can be managed — you can create the conditions for significant future growth inyour listing’s visibility
  2. To do this, you need to understand: how the listing was created, how it went throughverification, what level of trust it has, and how much potential it holds for ranking in thelocal pack.
  3. To get a listing reinstated, it’s typically sufficient to provide documents proving ownershipof the business name and the address where it’s located. If there were no actions that madeGoogle suspect spam or review manipulation, these documents will almost certainly beenough.
  4. We achieved very strong growth after the listing was reinstated, but that doesn’t mean thisresult couldn’t have been achieved through normal promotion. However, this approachdefinitely saves time and effort — which can be critical for local promotion of a newbusiness. Use it! 🙂
